About us.

Top Hat Chimney Sweeps was initially set up to clean and maintain wood burners in rural North Dunedin and Blueskin Bay which resulted in a (believe it or not) passion for the trusty Kiwi wood burner and an understanding that to achieve optimal performance the way your fire is intended to operate requires more than just a chimney sweep. That said, above all else it is important to have a flue clear of creosote and carbon build up which over time has a degrading affect on rivets and non stainless steel components; and smells.

In Dunedin and rural areas, our long burning season dictates that our chimneys and flues should be cleaned annually, and at the very least every two years.  In our opinion, unless you are burning dry seasoned wood you require an annual clean.

The single biggest risk of fire to your home is your wood burner, which, beyond its aesthetic exterior is essentially a raging inferno in our living space. It deserves to be cleaned regularly and otherwise, will not perform to its best.

The operating manuals for modern wood burners set out the maintenance regime for your particular model and long term efficiency is dependent on regular cleaning and maintenance.

Some models of wood burner consist of more perishable parts than others, which over time degrade and require replacement. Cleaning prolongs the life of air pipes, promets and baffles, door seals and bricks, and most importantly your wood burner flue.

We have cleaned most if not all model of wood burner and taken the time to learn the individual intricacies of each fire box.  We have developed a system to clean the earlier model Woodsman ECR Novos and other challenging models and worked with the manufacturers to find a solution for our customers.

We take a 'can do' approach.

When it is wet and cold, our wood burners become the soul of our homes. Top Hat's mission is to care for your wood  burner and ensure you get the absolute best from it.
